Topics discussed in the past:

List of websites for photometry and radiometry (2002-2003)

We had a proposal to develop a list of websites on photometry and radiometry. There are many useful websites presenting educational materials in photometry, colorimetry, and radiometry, from universities, national labs, organizations, and companies, but they are scattered around and not known by many people. It will be very useful to compile all such website information known by CR3 members. We discussed in what form we may prepare this. The participants agreed to start collecting the lists to the chairman and will discuss this further at the next meeting.

Optical data correlation on luminance and chromaticity (1997 -2000)

Problems of non-correlation of photometric and colorimetric measurements in avionics industry (lamps, lighted panels, LCD and CRT displays for aircraft) was addressed. Within Rockwell Collins, an intercomparison of reference standards (integrating sphere sources) for luminance and chromaticity was conducted among several laboratories in different locations. Mike Jergens shared the results with CR3 memebers for discussion. As an outcome of the discussion, an intercomparison of calculation of correlated color temperature was initiated within CR3.

Directory of Calibration and Testing Laboratories (1994 -2000)

A need for a directory of commercial calibration and testing laboratories in photometry and radiometry was addressed. CR-3 agreed to produce such a directory. The CR-3 spent a few years to prepare the CORM-wide survey on calibration and testing laboratories, which became the basis for the directory. The survey was distributed in September 1997, and responses were collected by 1998. The Directory was published in May 2000.

Directory of Reference Documents on Photometry (1994-1997, 2000)

There are many useful standard documents in photometry, but these are scattered around in many different organizations, and a need for a directory of such documents was addressed. After 3 years of efforts by the CR-3 members, the Directory has been published by CORM in September 1997. This is a directory of reference documents in the area of photometry extracted from lists of documents issued by ANSI, ASTM, BIPM, CIE, CORM, IES/NA, ISO, NCSL, NIST, NVLAP, and SAE. A limited number of related documents on colorimetry of light sources, measurements of transmittance and reflectance, and fundamental metrology are also included. The contact information including website addresses of the organizations are also given.
CR3 then worked on the revision of the document in 2000, which was published in 2001.

Intercomparison of the calculation of correlated color temperature (1998-1999)

Standardization of luminous flux measurements. (1994-1995)

A need for a national-level standard document in this area was addressed. The CIE Pub. 84 is ignored in the U.S. Almost no lamp companies and testing laboratories in the U.S. use (nor plans to use) 80 % sphere coating which CIE recommends. The publication recommends only strict substitution for sphere photometry, despite the fact that integrating spheres are often used to transfer to different types of lamps. The transfer can be done with acceptable uncertainties by using well-maintained, higher-reflectance integrating spheres with much less cost than using goniophotometers. Since this subject is mostly related to lighting industries where people refer to IES guides, CR-3 decided to propose it to IESNA Testing Procedures Committee (CR-3 has several IES/TPC members). IES/TPC has established a project to write an IES guide for this subject. The chairman will addressed this issue at CIE, also.

Directory of photometric instrument manufacturers. (1993-1994)

A need for a directory of manufacturers for standard lamps, standard photometers, reference materials, and other photometric equipment, was addressed. The CR-3 foresaw difficulty in completeness of such directly and possible legal problems. While this subject was discussed, a directory including such information was published in the Feb. 94 issue of Lighting Design & Application (IESNA). There is also a comprehensive directory published annually from Photonics Spectra. The subcommittee reached a consensus that these publications suffice the need.

Standardization in the Method of Evaluating Illuminance and Luminance Meters (1993-1995)

The inconsistency in expressing the spectral mismatch of illuminance/luminance meters by the manufactures was addressed. The CIE-recommended practice (Pub. 69), including the evaluation term f1', was not widely used by the photometer manufacturers in the U.S. then. This issue was brought to IESNA, and the Testing Procedures Committee published an article "IESNA Survey of Illuminance Meters and Luminance Meters" in Lighting Design & Application (xx, 1994), in which the CIE evaluation terms were introduced and recommended. The chairman also proposed to CIE Division 2 to convert the CIE Pub. 69 into an ISO/CIE standards for wider acceptance. In 1995, CIE established a new technical committee (TC2-40) for this purpose.

OSA/AIP Handbook of Applied Photometry (1993)

There was a proposal from the Book Publishing Committee of Optical Society of America to publish a handbook on photometry in collaboration with CORM. CR-3 came to a conclusion that, considering the amount of work and time to be dedicated, it was beyond the scope of the mission of CR-3. It was decided that the contribution to this project would be made by any CR-3 or CORM members on an individual basis. (The book was later published in 1997 with contributions from four CR-3 members.)
